Francis

Personal Statement

Francis devoted more than three decades to working as a chemical engineer at Merck Research Laboratories where he developed processes for manufacture of the active ingredients in pharmaceutical drugs. His work was published in peer reviewed scientific journals and he received two patents for his work. Despite his career demands he found time to engage in volunteer activities promoting science by judging science fairs, mentoring, and giving demonstrations in elementary and middle schools. For the past two years he has taught chemistry at the Rahway public high school. Although Francis is passionate about science and math, he recognizes it is a difficult challenge for many students. His approach is to first help students increase their self-confidence that they “can do it” and nothing is impossible. This is followed by breaking large complex concepts into smaller manageable pieces that are easier to grasp and whenever possible by making analogies to familiar things. Francis expresses his approach by paraphrasing a familiar quote, “If I teach a person a fact, they are helped for a day. If I teach them how to think, they are helped for a lifetime.” Skills used in science are surprisingly similar to those in other fields such as finance and business. He graduated Cum Laude from Catholic University of America with a BS in Chemical Engineering.

“…Thanks for all you have done. My son was thrilled with his 90 on the take home and 20/24 on his Biology test. He has come a long way from where he was when you first started tutoring him.”
