Personal Statement

J.D. is driven by curiosity about the big questions in life and passionate about helping students make sense of the amazing world around them using the tools of math and science. His educational motto is that there is an easy way to explain anything; it’s just really hard to find. As a result he is constantly on the lookout for new problems, new analogies, new visualizations and new technological tools that can help make seemingly impenetrable topics become transparent. He also believes that good teaching and learning is at least 50% about asking the right questions. He has worked at both independent and public schools and has experience teaching the full gamut of middle school and high school math and science courses. He is most gratified when students transition away from a ‘fixed’ mindset-believing that ability in math is something you either have or you don’t-and convert to a ‘growth’ mindset-believing that ability in math grows by effort and taking intellectual risks. In his spare time he enjoys watching movies, screenwriting, reading philosophy and playing guitar.
