Personal Statement

“Math is very much like a puzzle. There is (usually) a right answer at the end, but not one way to get there. When people solve puzzles, each has their own unique approach. Some start from the outside, some from the center. Some sort pieces by color, some use the picture on the box. Unlike solving puzzles, in math there is an association between “one right answer” and “one right way””. Kate’s goal as a teacher is to help students find the thought process that works for them, as there usually isn’t one single way to approach a math problem. Finding their own way often leads to a deeper understanding of the material, which is when math becomes more than memorizing formulas…it becomes fun!

“…Kate has the most genuine care for her students that I have seen in an educator. She has the rare ability to connect with students on many different levels. It is easy for her to teach the finer points of a given topic and turn right around to help students resolve conflicts they may be having in other areas. She teaches the whole student each and every single day.”
