Personal Statement

Richard has been a high school teacher and adjunct college professor for the past 15 years. He is currently a teacher for Math, Science, Technology Applications, Chemistry, Earth Science, Living Environment and College Biology through SUPA (Syracuse University’s Project Advance). Rich received his bachelor’s degree from Franklin and Marshall College, and then went on to study accounting at the University of Virginia, where he earned a master’s degree. While working as a tax accountant, he also earned a law degree from Rutgers. After leaving the business world to pursue teaching, Rich had the opportunity to work with learning disabled students. Through these experiences, he grew to believe that learning is most effective when it is conceptual and inquiry based, and tailored to meet the needs and learning style of the student. More importantly, it should be as comfortable, as “user friendly,” and as “success oriented” an experience as possible for the student. Rich feels that this philosophy greatly assists him in meeting the needs of his students and tutoring clients — whether he is teaching them difficult scientific concepts or explaining the steps to solve an algebraic equation.
