Deanna

Personal Statement

Deanna delivers tutoring based on her Ph.D. and more than 30 years teaching English and Speech Communication to students from 8th grade through college and graduate school. She has also coached high school debate. She has been certified in 7th-12th grade English and Speech in Texas and Massachusetts. For two years, she lived in Taiwan, where she taught freshman English at Tunghai University. She also taught Management Communication (business writing and speaking) in the first-year MBA program at Harvard Business School and co-authored a Harvard Business School marketing communications case study and two technical reports. She has published numerous Communication articles and book chapters and is co-author of a Communication Theory textbook. Students have presented undergraduate research and written papers and published book chapters co-authored with her. Her favorite part of her teaching is working individually with students. She believes tutors must begin with what students know and do best, then lead them to improve using examples and familiar analogies. She especially enjoys helping students improve their writing. After taking her Communication Theory courses, college students have said, “You taught us how to write” and, “I was one of only three students in my junior English course who didn’t have to rewrite the first English paper” even though most students taking the course were English majors.
