Personal Statement

Dmitry is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, graduating from the university's premier merit-based scholarship program, the Levine Scholars Program. In undergrad, he received a BA in English (Language and Digital Technology) and a BA in Applied Anthropology with minors in Russian Studies and Linguistics. During his four years at UNC Charlotte, he studied abroad three times, spending a summer in Stellenbosch, South Africa, a semester in St. Petersburg, Russia, and a summer on an archaeological dig site in the Holy City of Jerusalem. He is currently a Master’s Candidate at Georgetown University on a fully-funded merit scholarship, studying professional applications of sociolinguistics (i.e. language in social contexts and how language-based data can be used for meaningful change). He has a vast array of intellectual interests, including discourse analysis, identity co-construction, extremism and conflict, intercultural and interdiscourse communication, institutional gatekeeping, digital discourse and communication in virtual environments, international education, and multilingualism. As a queer, first-generation college student, Dmitry’s teaching philosophy is to question and push traditional molds of success in educational spaces. He embraces the beauty of diversity and nuanced lived experience when he works with his students, understanding every student is unique in their own way. Furthermore, he believes that they have the right to shine in their educational endeavors regardless of background. Dmitry infuses this mentality with his technical and analytical understanding of identity and language-based practices to help his students best express themselves in their academic work.
