Personal Statement

Elena holds a B.A. in English from Drew University, where she earned Dean's List honors twice. Through her collegiate career, she developed strong analytical and communication skills by participating in peer review workshops, leading class discussions, and mentoring fellow students informally with writing assignments. She is particularly drawn to tutoring because she finds it rewarding to help others overcome blocks and anxieties surrounding subjects they find difficult, understanding firsthand how discouraging it can be to struggle when others seem to grasp concepts easily. She feels that creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes is central to her teaching philosophy. With a natural ability to explain complex literary concepts in accessible ways, she focuses on building students' confidence alongside their skills, emphasizing that struggles are simply part of the learning process rather than a reflection of ability. Elena, maybe unsurprisingly, enjoys reading in her spare time, as well as writing, listening to music, and hobby crafting.
