Personal Statement

As an educator, I have been a lifelong learner and achiever. I completed most of my doctoral credits in English and comparative literature at Columbia University on full academic scholarship for three years in a very competitive program. I have taken subsequent coursework in public relations, developmental psychology, screenwriting, statistics, and broadcast journalism. I have given presentations throughout NYC at libraries on the writing process and writing for magazines. I have also written for magazines on a variety of subjects, from art to fashion to sleep disorders, interviewing many prominent people cross industry and landing many cover page features, earning unexpected bonuses for the quality of my work. I have also written and designed training courses on subjects as diverse as engineering, cataract blindness, and fashion. I have more than 134 publications (digital and print). I have acquired knowledge of medical and health topics, technology, wine, fashion, art, entertainment and politics. I was a researcher in politics and international affairs for a prominent political strategist who was an advisor to Hillary Clinton and Bloomberg, contributing to the content and research for three published books. As a professional writer, i I have also taught on the college level for more than a decade; in addition to teach all levels of English classes, I was particularly effective improving writing and critical thinking skills and working in accelerated programs. My rich educational and professional background increases my effectiveness as a tutor. My educational philosophy is to quickly assess and diagnose students' weaknesses, work with them to build skills and fill in the gaps of their background, use strategies on tests in addition to building knowledge and skills, and build a rapport and long-term relationship. I have had many long-term relationships with students I have tutored and have worked with all ability levels, all age levels, from 2nd grade to doctoral candidates in multiple subject areas who needed help writing and editing long-form essays and improving their writing. In doing so, I have not only improved verbal abilities but also the ability to think clearly and analytically. I am supportive, a good listenener and responsive to student needs.
