Mark
Personal Statement
Mark has been a tutor for 10 years in all high school subjects, including advanced STEM and liberal arts courses, as well as the SAT, ACT, and the English, US and European History AP exams. Mark has experience in providing executive function coaching to help students with ADHD and other diagnoses manage their time and complete academic tasks. In addition to tutoring academic subjects, Mark also gives private lessons on trombone, trumpet and tuba, as well as music theory and jazz improvisation. Mark received a BA in History from Princeton University in 2011, and since that time has been a freelance trombonist, tubist, composer and recording artist in New York City. Mark's approachable, patient style of tutoring helps his students succeed by giving them the space they need to identify their academic weaknesses and improve upon them, without the negative stress and pressure that can often accompany the learning process. He takes particular pride in encouraging his students to solve problems creatively and to sharpen their writing and critical thinking abilities. As a musician, Mark has become an expert in many genres, particularly jazz and salsa, and leads a New Orleans-style brass band. He has found versatility, spontaneity and preparation to be essential qualities for excellence in tutoring, as well as in music.
