Personal Statement
Nicole has two bachelor’s degrees, including a degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. She has lived and tutored in the U.S., Kazakhstan, and the Czech Republic to students of varying abilities and age groups. Her experience tutoring has predominantly been in mathematics and English, including at the Sylvan Learning Center, to K-12 students. The subjects in math that she has tutored include everything from elementary mathematics to Calculus II and SAT/ACT prep. She became interested in mathematics while she was in college. She came to love the problem-solving as well as the detail and precision involved. And she loves teaching, watching students' progress and seeing their facial expressions when they understand a concept. She finds that one of the more challenging aspects for students is understanding the concepts in mathematics. It is one thing to memorize equations and algorithms, and another to understand why they work and apply those math concepts to everyday situations. As such, she tries to tutor in such a way that students can find enjoyment and meaning in the topics that they are learning. She also tries to create positive environments for students so that they can build on their content knowledge of math and develop greater confidence in themselves.
