Personal Statement

Roger is currently an Upper School Spanish teacher at a nationally ranked High School in Northern NJ, where he has taught all levels of the language for the past ten years. Prior to returning to the U.S. in 2011, he lived, worked and studied in Colombia for nearly 10 years, teaching English at both the high school and university level and earning a Master’s degree in education in 2008 from the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, which was the institution where he worked. He has also traveled extensively in Latin America and has spent time in Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico and Chile. He offers a very unique perspective as a Spanish teacher because even though he is not a native speaker, he has acquired native fluency in the language and understands the process of learning Spanish from the point of view of a native English speaker. He produces an energizing and creative learning environment in his classes and transmits his love of both the Spanish language and Latin culture to his students. He earned a B.A. in international affairs from George Washington University in 2001 and enjoys traveling, reading and exercising.
