Personal Statement

Sylvia brings joy and enthusiasm to teaching English at all levels. Currently, she teaches AP English Lit 12 at Oak Knoll, where she has taught all grades in high school for the last 21 years. She welcomes discussion and enjoys getting to know her students as individuals. Previous to teaching high school, Sylvia taught college classes, to mainly first year students at several colleges, including Drew, FDU and Temple University, while she earned an MA at Temple and a Ph.D. at Drew. She sees writing as a journey and a process of shaping our thoughts. Sylvia's students enjoy her warmth and enthusiasm and tend to appreciate the ways she helps them hone their writing skills. Meanwhile Sylvia is devoted to her two daughters, who are now college graduates; both double-majored in English and History/American studies, suggesting that she lets young people find room for themselves in writing and thinking. Sylvia also enjoys helping students prepare for the exams and essays that help open the door to their colleges.
