Personal Statement

Thomas has been teaching since 1988 at one of the country’s finest high schools. After graduating with honors from Bucknell University with a degree in English and history, Thomas then completed a M.A. in English and Comparative Literature, also with honors, from Columbia University. Before joining his recent independent school, Thomas taught English at The Park School in Baltimore, Maryland, and at York Preparatory School in New York City. Over the years, he has coached soccer, wrestling, track, and softball, served as a faculty adviser for various literary clubs and participated on many academic and curriculum committees. Recognized numerous times for his teaching excellence, he has received many prestigious awards over his successful career. An experienced SAT and reading/writing tutor as well, he brings tremendous energy and passion to helping his students to become better thinkers and writers. Outside the classroom, Thomas enjoys taking long bike rides around New Jersey, running, and keeping fit. “I have always devoted myself to engaging my students actively in the learning process, whether deconstructing a sonnet by Shakespeare or refining a strategy for the SAT exam. If they can see themselves as invested in the tasks at hand, they will tap their reserves of intellect and imagination to a far greater degree. And of course, they will probe the material more deeply and retain far more of what they learn. By inviting my students to take up these and other challenges, I inspire them to bring what they know and what they can do to the table. Challenging my students to play an active role in the learning process, I inspire them to make the most of their educational opportunities.”
